Today was a lazy day. Well, for most of us anyway. While, Dan, went to work the rest of us slept in. There wasn’t a thing on the calendar, and we took full advantage of it.
We ate a late breakfast, and lounged in the living room without a care in the world. We had merely thought about moving. And then the phone rang.
I didn’t recognize the number of the incoming call, but I answered it anyway. On the other end, was a man’s voice. He stated he was going to be Griffin’s basketball coach. He went on to explain, he had received the list of players just this morning.
“Is there anyway you could bring him to practice at 11:00 today…?”
It was 10:35, the gym is 10 minutes away, and we weren’t even close to being ready for this impromptu practice.
I hung up the phone, and immediately went into drill sergeant mode. I quickly devised a plan, and began barking orders.
“Ruthie and Owen, put these clothes on. Griffin, you probably need to eat something before we leave…”
I continued to give instructions as I jumped in the shower. With my hair
dryed close enough to dry, and the kids loaded in the truck, we headed down the road. It was 10:55.
“Griffin, you are going to be about five minutes late. I am sorry…Dad or I will pick you up. I can’t stay. There is no way the other two will sit there for an hour and a half…”
I glanced in the mirror as I drove.
“I hope I don’t embarrass you to badly.”
“Why would you say that, Mom?”
“Well, because I didn’t get a chance to look at myself once I got out of the shower. I am not sure what I look like.”
“You won’t embarrass me, Mom.”
As we arrived to the gym, we hustled inside. Griffin quickly discovered a classmate on the gym floor. Moments later he joined him, while I spoke to the coach.
“I’ll be back to pick him up…”
And then the classmate’s dad spoke up, “I can take him home”.
I just needed to let, Griffin, know. I went onto the gym floor, and motioned for him to come toward me.
He smiled, and tried to discretely wave. However, I didn’t budge, and he was forced to come toward me.
I am pretty sure this was the definition of embarrassment.
How quickly he had changed his tune.
